Therapy/counseling while doing IB
Going into IB but I do have depression/anxiety and I rely on therapies. However I do know the unpredictable work would really affect therapy and counseling appointments. Does anyone in IB currently do therapies? How do you make sure you have time for them (like weekend and/or shorter appts, or online chats)? Any input would be helpful.
I see my therapist over FaceTime. Makes it much easier.
Did you started off with your therapist using facetime appointments?
Yes, actually even pre-COVID through something called SohoMD. I never wanted to go live because you’d be away from the desk for 1.5 hours mid day and when I was younger the thought of that much time out of office gave me anxiety.
I had someone pretty close to the office that I saw and I typically scheduled sessions around lunch time or earlier in the morning. I would block off my calendar and really make it a priority to ensure that other things didn’t get in the way (if a team tried to schedule a meeting during that time, I simply would say I have a conflict and that we can do later in the day).
Do it during lunch and block off your calendar. If people put meetings over it (they usually don't - an IB analyst's calendar is not booked solid) just tell them you have a conflict and need to do a different time
Maybe every 4-6 months you'll be on such a deadline you have to reschedule, but you will be ok most of the time.
Make this your priority. I’m a big believer of putting your head down and rolling with the punches as a junior.
That said, I got blasted by my VP for going to my psychiatrist (had told him I had a doctors appointment). I immediately went to my staffer and blew it up. Made it very clear I was happy to bring HR into this situation. Once I explained to my staffer it was a psychiatrist, no more questions were asked. I didn’t want people at work to know, but this was different.
My best friend committed suicide. Mental health is no joke, and this job makes it very very hard on you. Make it your priority and do what you need to keep your head on. If anyone ever tells you differently, they’re wrong.
Facts ^^^
How did you bring this up to your staffer? Do you think that incident affected your relationship with your group (office politics stuff) or your year-end reviews in any way? For context, I'm a very non-confrontational and rather petite woman and get really anxious in those types of situations. I think what you shared is what the ideal me would do, but irl I can imagine myself simply giving in.
I’m not going to pretend to know what it’s like to be a petite girl- but nothing is worth your mental health. Yeah, some parts of life are going to suck and sometimes you’ll get less sleep and feel sub optimal in life. BUT if you are truly feeling depressed, not being A+ with everyone on office politics is still exponentially better than being in such a dark spot it affects you. I don’t work in finance, but I block off time on my calendar every week to see my psychiatrist.
