Thinking of Starting a Market Insights Business Intelligence (MIBI) "Group" in my City - Anyone done this before?

My city is starting to have more "data" focused tech companies spring up - specifically focused around business intelligence and data modeling - looking to start a group of like minded individuals that meet monthly etc. to discuss this trend and begin to network with industry professionals and get in on the culture- tap into local colleges, cities economic development group and industry professionals at companies located in the area

I currently work as an analyst focused on this...

Started something like this in college and obviously much easier to do but was wondering if anyone has done this before with some success and could discuss best practices...

I'm familiar with meetup.com and our local young professionals group but was thinking of tapping my contacts at the local college programs but thats about all I have at this point, was gonna set up a website, a group on linkedin, a facebook group, twitter account etc. and on the website have some resources (whitepapers etc.) as well as a blog to start the discussion and host a "call out" if I get some buy in from my contacts

Thoughts on this?
