Title of People who Read and Select CVs at IBs?

Hi there,

As the title suggests, I need to know how to find and who to address at an IBD when applying.

I have a connection at Goldman Sachs, but in Calgary, not the one that I am applying to (Toronto). He has recommended me internally but suggested I apply myself as well. He is unfamiliar with who is in charge of hiring in TO and I found this person online, Michelle Zhu, who is a Human Resources Recruiter in Toronto at GS.

Is this the right person to name in my cover letter? Are there multiple people doing this job? I do not want to put the wrong name and I've heard it's a death sentence to put to whom it may concern.

Any suggestions? Does anyone know who is in charge of hiring in Toronto?

Cheers

Absolutely no one reads cover letters, ever. Don't even bother with it. GS had over 200k internship applications last year, most of those resumes never get seen by a human let alone any cover letters.

Connections to the firm help in that they either 1. forward your resume directly to the recruiting team or HR team (preferred) or 2. recommend you internally with Workday (less helpful).

Also I would recommend you take off some of the details in this post, it is pretty easy for people to identify you. And certainly take off the recruiter's name.

Hmm.

My connection is referring me internally (presumably using that workday thing you talked about as he didn't seem to know the recruiting manager/HR team). How much worse is this? Should I try and find some contacts at the Toronto firm and find the recruiter through them and ask him to send it to them?

Is it that easy? I'm applying for a position that already has 2.1K applicants and all people know is that I know someone in Calgary.

Should I even bother writing a cover letter then? Honestly. If I'm referred internally (either directly or through workday), should I just submit my CV and call it a day?

Look up networking on here for how to do this. You should reach out to several people in the Toronto office and get on the phone with them. Don't just ask them to forward your resume, you have to ask about their experience, what they think about the group, how you can best position yourself for recruiting, and end with asking if they know what their recruiting timeline looks like, and if there is anyone else they could refer you to speak to.

Tbh someone from another office who doesn't know anyone in the office you're aiming for does not help too much. It would only really help if he had a friend in the office he could connect you with. Submitting a resume, even with a referral, is like tossing it into a black hole if you don't network with the actual office you want.

Internal referral through workday helps a tiny bit, but you need like 5+ people in the office who will vouch for you. 2.1k applicants are for 10 spots (idk GS Toronto, but assuming it's a small office) so they won't even look through resumes, they will just use the kids who have reached out and talked to a bunch of people.
