Topics to Review Before Starting 1st Year Full-Time IB Analyst Gig at a Boutique M&A Shop?

Hi all,

I'm starting full-time this year and was interested in seeing what you guys recommend I review/study before starting as a full-time analyst at a boutique investment bank. I want to make sure that when I get in I'm sharp and ready to go. I appreciate the help.

  1. If you haven't already - Rosenbaum and Pearl.
  2. Make sure you know how to navigate the software you will be using. It might sound stupid but spending some time in Excel and Powerpoint to make sure you know where to go for what can keep you from having to ask people stupid questions.
  3. Read about recent deals that your group has done or deals in their space.

Just a couple things that come to mind, good luck!!

Point 2 is actually pretty underrated for a 1st year. Most 1st years will be slow and spend several more hours than they need to just because they aren't familiar with shortcuts or how to effectively use Excel or Powerpoint. If you can master at least the most commonly used or helpful shortcuts like CTRL+SHIFT+Drag with your Mouse to copy an aligned object, then you will save a lot of time down the line compared to other analysts who will realize or be told how to do this several months in.
