Training and running a marathon as AN1?

About to start as an AN1. Is it possible to find the time to train for and run a marathon in October or November? Has anyone here done this or is the schedule too crushing?

My bank has pencils down 6 PM Friday to noon Saturday so thinking I can fit in long runs during that …

Based on the most helpful WSO content, training for a marathon as an AN1 is challenging but not impossible, especially if you leverage your bank's "pencils down" policy from Friday 6 PM to Saturday noon. Here are some tips to make it work:

  1. Leverage Long Runs During Pencils Down: Use the Friday evening to Saturday morning window for your long runs. This is the most critical part of marathon training, and having a consistent time slot for it will help you stay on track.

  2. Shorter Runs During the Week: Fit in shorter runs during weekdays, either early in the morning or late at night, depending on your schedule. Even 30-45 minutes can be effective for maintaining your base fitness.

  3. Cross-Training and Recovery: If you're too exhausted for a run, consider low-impact cross-training like cycling or swimming to avoid burnout. Recovery is key, so prioritize sleep and nutrition.

  4. Adjust Expectations: You may not have the time to follow a traditional marathon training plan. Focus on completing the race rather than aiming for a personal best.

  5. Communicate with Your Team: If possible, let your team know about your goal. Some colleagues might be supportive and help you manage your workload around key training sessions.

  6. Be Flexible: Work in IB can be unpredictable, so be prepared to adjust your training schedule as needed. Consistency is important, but adaptability is crucial in this environment.

Many AN1s have successfully trained for endurance events by being disciplined and strategic with their time. It’s tough, but with proper planning and commitment, it’s definitely achievable!
