Transferring universities... contact hr?

I am going to be SA at a BB. Passed background check already and I have been assigned a SA group.

However, I'm probably going to transfer from one college to another for personal reasons (both ivy league or equivalent). Do I call up HR and just say a) that I've decided to transfer schools, and b) I want to double check that I am considered a sophomore rather than a junior.

I don't think this will be a super big deal and the firm hires sophomores/juniors from a variety of schools, but I want to make sure that I handle this properly. I assume that I should tell the firm before the summer, correct? Do I phone it in or email or what?
