Traveling & Work on Weekends?

I Just started as an A1 and considering 2 weekend trips out of town to visit friends over the next couple of months. My only reservation is that I don’t want to spend $400+ on flights only to have my weekend killed with work and ruin whatever plans my friends had for us while I’m there (none of them work in finance and they don’t really understand the time demand). My group is pretty slow right now but we’re usually M&A heavy and I’ve had to work varying amounts almost every weekend since I started. Obviously I don’t want to push back on work as a new analyst but I’ve been really responsive to untimely weekend demands so far and think I deserve a couple weekends this fall where I can push off work to Sunday night if need be.

How did you guys handle this during your first year? Is it worth my time trying to plan anything or should I wait until I’ve built more rapport to take bigger weekend trips?
