Trying to get a junior year investment banking internship with a drug possession charge
I am currently a rising junior at a semi-target school. I have been networking aggressively ahead of recruitment season for a junior year IB internship.
Freshman year I was caught with 2 tabs of LSD in my dorm room which weren't even mine. However, possession is 9/10ths of the law and I was arrested and charged with a state jail felony for this possession since LSD is schedule 1. I was 18 years old, I made the stupid decision of holding it for my out-of-town friend which I will never do again. I have definitely learned a lot from this truly nerve racking experience.
However, I just got off the phone with my attorney yesterday and he said I was accepted to a pretrial diversion program which comes with the stipulation of dismissal and expungement following the dismissal at the end of the program (includes a drug class and some community service hours).
But the problem is that this program lasts one full year and the dismissal won't come through until the end of July (well into intern szn). And the expungement would come through another month or so after that.
My question is, what impact will this record have on my ability to retain a wall street internship offer next summer?
What can I do to minimize the impact this may have on my professional life for the next year or so (until the dismissal and expungement come through). Thanks in advance for your advice.
Update: I can get a letter from my attorney stating that a dismissal and expungement is right around the corner to provide to a potential employer if that would be of any help.
