Currently undergoing background check for a BB firm in the UK, including a regulatory reference. Will regulatory reference be requested from past FCA-regulated employers from when I was only interning or for previous internships, only employment verification will be requested? Left a specific employer on bad terms during an internship so am afraid this would affect regulatory reference from this specific employer

If it’s on your CV, they’d ask your prior employer your start and end date, position/title and reason for leaving. On the last point, it would literally be something like “other career prospects” or “internship ended”. And then on the FCA reg point, it would be asking them questions to check if there are any genuine red flags, e.g., if you were ever under investigation for anything unlawful. Employers usually won’t delve into things like performance and your character to avoid backfire.
