UK graduates US IB
I’m currently studying economics and management at the universe of Oxford in the UK. I wish to work in one of the IB firms in the United States (a much bigger world with more opportunities I suppose), get some experience then move onto PE.
Is there any way as a UK graduate to be hired in the US or do I have to do a further degree in the US to get a chance? Or should I just stay in the UK?
All your advice it’s very much appreciated. thank you.
Whether you want to stay in the UK or not is up to you, nobody can answer that for you. London is a great spot for IB roles or other finance opportunities, it is your home after all (assuming you were born / raised in the UK).
There are many different ways to get to the US from the UK or Europe (or elsewhere):
1) Apply for US internships (as a student you do qualify for the J visa)
2) Graduate in the UK and start working in the UK, then ask your employer to transfer you on L, H, or E visa
3) After graduation, you could study in the US after UG in the UK. Then you would qualify for F1 and then CPT/OPT.
4) After graduation in the UK, you could try for a H1 sponsorship from abroad. Unlikely to happen, but you never know plus, legally this is a route that is permitted.
5) Your family members may provide sponsorship (if they are US citizens and all other requirements are met)
6) Interrupt your studies in the UK and transfer from your school to a US school and then go through F1, cpt/opt, H1b, green card, etc
7) Participate in the diversity lottery if you qualify; you might win the green card (countries that had a lot of immigration in the past do not qualify)
8) Immigration based on extraordinary skills (if you are a published professional in the field of business, sports, research, etc)
Many other options are available if you are holding a UK or EU passport.
Best of luck to you.

This has been asked a billion times on this forum. If you don’t go to school in the US, don’t bother applying to internships/jobs there. Instead, do one of two things: either work in London for a few years and transfer to your bank’s NYC office, or go to grad school in the US and use your CPT/OPT work visa to get an offer
correct, best option being the former.
