UK - Virtual SAs - Taxes with work from abroad
Hello, Question for SAs in London who are working from another country (in the EEA). Does anyone know whether we will have to pay taxes to the UK or to the country we work in (EEA)?
Thanks!

Are you a UK student? If you live in the UK over 6 months/year you will just be taxed as normal in the UK and shouldn’t get taxed in your country.
If you aren’t it’s a case by case basis depending on tax agreements. I think you should be taxed as per the UK tax, and if you were to be taxed more in your country, you should pay the extra amount. But again check with the payroll team & your local government tax website - there is frequently areas to ask weird questions to tax guys.
Hey, do you know if I need to contact HMRC to change my tax code as a summer intern? I.e, only earning c. 10k across the summer, but will I be taxed as if I’m earning 4.5k a month?
Normally you had to give you National Insurance number if you have one to your bank, and thus they should not tax you until you reach the threshholds. I was taxed too much as an intern, but you can always ring them and they return the funds quite quickly.

Hey, mind sharing where you found the info on the UK gov website?
WSO does not let me post a link, but you can google “Tax on your UK income if you live abroad”
Applies only if 1) your UK tax rate>French tax rate and you lived less than 6 months in France over the last fiscal year.

Anyways general rule of thumb - pay your taxes, you can always claim back your over paid taxes. Not like you are living in London having to pay rent, and even then it should be more than enough post tax to cover your costs.
