University of Oxford vs NYU
Good evening,
I got accepted at both Oxford and NYU. I want to work in investment banking in the USA, because you make more money here. I have three citizenships; Italian, American, and British, so visa will not be a problem. You would think that NYU would be the better option, but college in UK is only 3 years for an undergraduate program, so I could graduate earlier and start making fat bands quicker. Also, college in UK focuses mainly on one subject area, versus USA where colleges try to make you well rounded and have you take courses you have no fucking interest in.
Which school should I go with?
Is it NYU Stern? If it is, then decide on whereyou want to work as you won’t be able to recruit for the US from the UK, and, although more feasible, will also have a hard time recruiting for the U.K. from the US. Both schools have strong brand names (Oxford being more prestigious outside of finance though) and place well within their respective regions.
If we’re talking about non-Stern NYU, then go to Oxford. More prestigious and non-Stern NYU does not place as well.
Yes, it is Stern. What if I go to Oxford and then move back to NYC after I graduate?
Thing is, recruiting for IB in the US from the U.K. will be near impossible given the sheer amount of networking that goes into it. Because everyone knows Oxford, you’ll prob get a good job, but maybe not IB, and will have to go for a US MBA to try again for NYC IB. Pan-European Monkey did a great post on that, check his reply in LSE vs NYU.
What you could also do though is go to Oxford, do London IB for a few years first, and then transfer to the US office.
Oxfors for few reasons: 1) Cost of tuition 3x9k=27k GPB, call it 35k USD and add 15k/year of living expenses all in (housing, food etc) so thats like 75k GBP for all of your studies or 90k USD. With 90k USD its gonna be what a year? I think its $50k/year just for tuition and add housing on top of that and you basically paid off your 3 years at Oxford. So financially your are much better off at Oxford - here I am assuming you currently live in Europe so European fees for Oxford.
2) Recruiting in the UK is easier although a bit random (what I mean by random is that you’ll get into a BB but some of the more qualified sometimes don’t get to interview at Top BBs for whatever reason).
3) you can always transfer after 2 years in IB in London to NYC.
4) Oxford is just a better than than NYU especially if you want to do an MBA, Oxford is the local Harvard with Princeton being Cambridge and LSE being Wharton - so just putting things in a context. Plenty of people (incl friends) have gone to the buyside straight from UG at Oxford.
5) try to find my post on why you cannot recruit for US roles out of the UK or it is basically impossible (will try to link it here) https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/lse-vs-nyu-stern#comment-1837977
Tough choice, but I would pick Oxford. NYU is great, but Oxford is elite. However, I will give NYU the edge for IB recruiting based on its location/alumni/on-campus event. That said, you should find out historically the no. of NYU students who were successful in IB recruiting. If it is just a small % (say
I’d take Oxford that brand name cannot be replicated by NYU and will serve you better in the long run. This will be especially true for anywhere else in the world except for US.
There are only a handful of schools in the world where you should even consider turning down Oxford. NYU isn't one of them.
^this.
NYU is excellent, but Oxford is god-tier, especially in the UK.
Oxford.
Do two years in London and then you can transfer to NYC.
The two schools do not compare. Not only will you save ~200k in tuition (not worth it at that point; you'll be paying it off for the better part of a decade and that's only if you're frugal), but your network will be much more elite.
Everyone's chiming in with career-based reasons, and I'd also like to add that your coursework/experience at Oxford will be much, much more interesting than NYU Stern. Finance classes suck ass and Oxford courses are unrivaled in terms of learning experience. Go to Oxford, major in PP&E then recruit for IB.
This is semi-relevant as he must have already choosen his major when applying thus his major is choosen now that he has received an offer to study there.
I have a sneaking suspicion that you're a role-player on this site, I doubt you really got into Oxford and NYU.
Who the fuck thinks NYU is better than Oxford? One is a global omnitarget/tier 1, the other is a regional tier 4/5
As someone who is a triple citizen of the same countries my biggest regret was not going to school in the U.K. Please go to Oxford. You can always transfer back if you want.
275k for school is hurting.
