Unpaid intern at small boutique, possible to turn into some form of stipend?

Had an interview for a small boutique bank and suffice it to say, it went well. I got the interview through a resume blast. I don't have a problem working unpaid as they're going to be giving me a ton of modeling experience. Is there any way I'll be able to pull a stipend of sorts? Heck, I don't even care if its as little as $500. Not sure how to approach the issue.

Also, assume I don't ask for anything throughout the internship. If I did consistent work throughout the summer, would it be out of the question for them to come back to me and say "hey, you did great work...here's a check."

echoing the above. if it;s unpaid from the start, just hope your boss somehow decided to give you some money for your hard work in the end of summer

AAI'd ask to make sure. I didn't get paid a dime at my internship last summer, but have friends at other firms that received a $1k-2k stipend at the end of their 'unpaid' summers.

What type of firms are we talking about here? And were they told prior that they would receive a stipend at the end of the internship?

I find it absolutely ridiculous that regional BBs and certain well-known MMs/boutiques only offer unpaid internships (usually with academic credit) when I could be getting paid $18+/hr at some unknown wealth management shop that recruits at my non-target.

But hey, if your fortunate enough to not be in dire need of immediate funds, then it's only the experience that matters. It will pay dividends in the long run.
