Valuating companies in different sectors/stages

What are some basic things (ratios, revenue, margins, EBITDA, etc.) to consider when valuating companies in various sectors and stages of life? i.e. an oil and gas company vs. a startup pharmaceutical company?

Thanks a lot for your help.
