Vent post + advice
Finally joining in on the vent posting here. Frankly been losing my mind recently. At a top BB that many would die to be in but I frankly never knew how much disinterest I would have for this job. I have no motivation to do more than what’s required and sometimes even finding myself avoiding to do work. Been prepping for buy side a bit I feel like I’m going through the motions. I miss free time. I miss having time to just recharge. Going through so much stress and pressure doesn’t feel great at all when I don’t care for the outcome of any of it. Wouldn’t say I hate finance but maybe I just hate how much of it is in my life at the moment. So many people say to stick around for the 2 years but idk man this sucks. Am I geared for a corporate role? IR or something? Have also heard VC lifestyle isn’t horrible. Don’t care for prestige.
Bump
I know exactly how you feel.
Back in college I spent years trying to break into banking. I finally landed a role as an Assistant Branch Manager at the Wells Fargo - Anchorage branch.
It goes without saying that many would kill for this coveted position. But when I got there I realized the culture wasn't for me. The long, cold nights. The lack of ambition. The faulty heater that would break down in the middle of the Anchorage winter (one time, our office coffee froze solid).
In moments like these you need to trust your gut. I saved up enough for a one way (basic economy) ticket to Chattanooga, where I have lived ever since, hitting 15 below par on the muni.
So funny bro.
Focus on the ways in which you can be improved by this environment. Whether it’s learning to manage the stress and sleep depravation, embracing the constantly approaching tight deadlines, or frankly getting through the crap parts of the job, it will improve you. The skill of surviving the mundane turns into the extraordinary when applied elsewhere
Unless u are not interested in anything related to finance (in that case, quit and go after that thing right now) stick it out. Not because other people want what you have, but because this is a time in your life when you are setting the foundation for the rest of your life. Gotta learn from the 2 yrs to make it worthwhile. Not the most fun path but definitely the most rewarding, how you approach this one thing will become how you approach everything else from this point forward
OP here. Thanks a lot man. Decent advice. Been doing some research and maybe VC maybe something to look into. Will try and soak up the bs as long as I can lol
I get your vent. But can I have your role fam
Bulge bracket banks are overrated tbh. Better off going to a great boutique
