Verbal Renege
How bad is a verbal renege when compared with a signed offer renege? I don't care about my reputation at X firm, only that Y firm may pull my signed offer if the MD at firm X complained to them. I never signed anything and just got nervous on the phone and it slipped out.

Neither is good. Written obviously worse. Tough to burn bridges before even starting your career.
You are fine, they won’t go after your new offer. Just make sure not to tell them where you are going to.
