Vista/Francisco Partners/Insight vs BB
Hey all, was wondering which analyst role is best out lf undergrad. For reference, the group at BB is okay but not tech / “top group”. In the long term, definitely see myself going buyside even if I do banking. However, I’m wondering if training will be better at BB? WLB might also be better at the buyside firms…? Not super sure. Also unsure how to think about pros and cons of BB brandnamd
Based on the most helpful WSO content, when considering analyst roles out of undergrad, especially when you have an inclination towards the buy-side in the long term, there are several factors to weigh in. Let's break down your considerations regarding training, work-life balance (WLB), and the brand name impact of Bulge Bracket (BB) firms versus buy-side firms like Vista, Francisco Partners, and Insight.
Training:
Work-Life Balance (WLB):
Brand Name and Long-Term Career Prospects:
In conclusion, if your long-term goal is to work on the buy-side, starting directly at a buy-side firm could offer a more relevant and focused experience from the outset. However, the structured training and brand name of a BB firm can also be valuable, especially if you're unsure about your long-term career path. It's essential to consider where your interests lie, particularly in terms of industry focus, and how you weigh the importance of training, work-life balance, and brand prestige in your career decisions.

If you see yourself in GE/PE long term: Vista > BB IB (let’s just assume GS TMT / MS Menlo for now) > Insight
If you want to go more VC/early stage investing: Insight > Vista > BB IB
Didnt include FP analyst program since it’s so new and not much information sis available, but given their track record, I would probably take them over the BB IB. Not sure if I’d quite take them over a Vista or Silver Lake analyst offer though.
Bump. Is it worth forgoing the BB brand for PE
Get in the spot you want to be in as soon as you can so you can get good at it. In 2 years the kid who’ll have taken your PE spot today will be far superior to you in his/her investing skill set. Also PE recruiting while working IB is not so easy either.
