What can be considered a boutique ib?
If a small shop does some investment banking but the majority of its employees and revenue are associated with brokerage like equity sales, can this place be considered a boutique investment bank? Could I describe it as such in interviews?
Not really, I think most people's definition of a boutique is a firm that is almost solely focused on M&A/Restructuring...not that they can't do other things of course.
What if the place describes itself as a "securities brokerage and investment banking firm"?
Well then, it's not really a boutique by the traditional definition, but then again, many ppl seem to have different definitions of what a boutique actually is, so ask around before you decide whether or not to refer to it as a boutique :)
Also, if they put brokerage BEFORE i=banking....
