well, there are thousands of MDs (I think , I'd guess 2k-3k globally), that funnels down to a couple of hundred partners (I think there's like 300, again, not totally sure).... and one CEO

Most MD's are not close to being CEO. MD's report up through layers of management, and management is a different track than the typical IBD progression. If you're a superstar MD, you can choose to try to run the department, at which point you are in management and now you can advance up and up til you are tapped to run the entire bank.
