What to Wear for In-Person Summer Coffee Chats

Recently secured an SA26 for a BB. Will be in the city over my sophomore summer for an internship and want to network with people at the BB in order to get ahead of the game for group placement. What would be appropriate to wear to these in-person chats?

The dress code will obviously differ for analyst chats vs. VP and MD chats, but for the three positions I mentioned, what would be appropriate to wear?

For in-person coffee chats, it's always better to err on the side of being slightly overdressed rather than underdressed, especially when networking with professionals at a BB. Here's a breakdown based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Analyst Chats:

    • Business casual is generally acceptable.
    • Consider wearing a collared shirt (button-down) paired with chinos or dress pants.
    • Avoid jeans unless you are certain the culture is very relaxed.
    • Polished loafers or dress shoes are a safe bet.
  2. VP Chats:

    • Step it up slightly from business casual.
    • A blazer over your button-down shirt with dress pants would be ideal.
    • Ties are optional but can add a touch of formality if you're unsure.
    • Stick to classic, neutral colors like navy, gray, or white.
  3. MD Chats:

    • Go for business formal.
    • A full suit (navy or charcoal) with a tie is recommended.
    • Ensure your shoes are polished and match your belt (black or dark brown).
    • Keep accessories minimal and professional.

Remember, first impressions matter, and dressing appropriately shows respect for their time and position. Always tailor your attire to the formality of the person you're meeting while keeping it professional.
