What would you ask the head of corporate M&A?

Last night at a cocktail party I met an old family acquaintance who is the head of M&A for a company that's been in the deal news lately. I talked with him a bit, discussing my investment banking goals, what he looks for in a banker, etc. I was curious what others on the board would ask someone like this, for example: -Is it appropriate to ask about details of a pending deal that's in the news? -Is it appropriate to ask about their future M&A strategy? -Is it appropriate to ask about terms, financial details, etc. of past deals?

i'd ask him how the job hunt is going

"its the running joke now, we now have fair trade with china so they send us poisoned sea food and we send them fraudulent securities."

i was kidding about the current M&A drought relative to a year ago, he may well be doing fine.

i wouldn't ask him that though because he, like you, may not "get it"

I wouldn't be asking about deal terms, that is not something he is likely to share with anyone outside the deal. A cocktail party isn't a place to be asking to many intrusive questions. Casual talk of industries of interest, congratulations on recent success, etc are appropriate for a cocktail party. I would set up a meeting to get into more in depth discussions.
