take the boutique IB - havent heard anyone from risk move into a bulge IB or buyside.. though with a risk background, one can get into the risk and portfolio mgt teams at big SWFs..

I'd take boutique IB, but because I value the experience. It opens up the buyside, and also can lead to internal M&A/CorpDev positions at f500. As for bschool placement, it depends considerably on the name recognition of your firm.

Risk isn't poorly compensated (70k base + up to 20k bonus), and the hours are a lot better. However, I have heard there is a good deal of variation between banks. At some risk is glorified compliance, whereas others actually do risk modelling.

I knew somebody who did risk out of undergrad and loved it. If that's what you're into, don't let my opinion dissuade you.
