When to start preparing for spring weeks?

Incoming LSE student, havent done any work all summer so pretty much zero technical knowledge rn. Trying to break into IB/S&T so the first step is spring weeks. Just wondering when the right time is to start preparing for these applications and what I should be doing to prepare. Thanks!

To maximize your chances for Spring Weeks, preparation should ideally start immediately. Here's a breakdown of what you should focus on:

1. Timing of Applications

  • Applications for Spring Weeks typically open in early September and are reviewed on a rolling basis. Banks often fill spots as they go, so applying early is crucial.
  • Aim to have your CV and cover letter ready by early September to submit applications as soon as they open.

2. What to Do Now

Since you’re starting with zero technical knowledge, here’s a step-by-step plan:

A. Build a Strong CV

  • Highlight any leadership, volunteering, or retail job experience you have. These can demonstrate transferable skills like teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.
  • If you lack finance-related experience, consider joining university finance societies as soon as you start at LSE. These can add credibility to your CV and provide networking opportunities.

B. Learn the Basics

  • Start with basic technical knowledge in finance. Focus on:
    • Financial statements (Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow Statement).
    • Valuation methods (DCF, Comparable Companies Analysis).
    • Market concepts (e.g., stocks, bonds, interest rates).
  • Use resources like WSO’s Financial Modeling Resources or Investment Banking Interview Prep to get up to speed.

C. Networking

  • Attend insight days or events hosted by banks. These are great for networking and learning about the industry.
  • Reach out to alumni or professionals on LinkedIn for informational interviews.

D. Practice Behavioral Questions

  • Prepare answers for common behavioral questions like:
    • "Why investment banking?"
    • "Why this bank?"
    • "Tell me about a time you worked in a team."
  • Use frameworks like STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your responses.

E. Mock Interviews

  • Consider scheduling mock interviews through services like WSO’s Mock Interviews with Pros to refine your skills.

3. Balancing Freshers and Applications

  • While enjoying Freshers’ Week is important, don’t let it delay your applications. Many successful candidates apply before even starting university to ensure they’re early in the process.

4. Additional Resources

  • Explore WSO’s Resume Reviews by Professionals to polish your CV.
  • Attend virtual bootcamps like the Investment Banking Interview 4-Hour Bootcamp or Financial Modeling & Valuation Bootcamp for structured learning.

By starting now, you’ll be well-prepared to submit strong applications early and stand out in the competitive Spring Week process. Good luck!
