generally any school with a big enough presence will send alums of that school. i think its mostly about seniority and who wants to go (2y analysts over 1y analysts etc) but it certainly varies from bank to bank
Recruiting is a lot of fun, and sometimes everyone wants to go on a trip. Preference goes to alumnus of the school in question with a preference to first years and senior staff. The reasoning behind this is, 1st years have connections among the people coming to the events and can have a real pull and Senior staff (VPs and MDs) will get their asses kissed. Those who get to go have nothing to do with their performance it has much more to do with load, if your staffer will let you go, if you can find the time to go, etc.
So, a top analyst or a bottom analyst will make it, this isn't top on anyones mind. The analyst who can find time and balance the two obligations is the one who gets to go. If you went to a target school and you can make the time, then make friends with the head recruiter and you will get to go to as many recruiting events as you can make time for.
Personally, I went to a target, was a top analyst, was friends with the head recruiter, and went to everything. Recruiting is AWESOME, bust out the Amex for everything and party like there is no tomorrow.
Totally agree. I also went for MBA recruiting, got a chance to visit all the top business schools on the company dime. Don't think that happens with banks (analysts going to MBA recruiting). Additionally depending on the firm culture/policy, you can take out your old college friends for dinner/drinking as "recruiting". Be careful with this, make sure it is ok before doing any ridiculous expensing.
