Which junior summer internship should I take?

Hey guys,

Right now I'm deciding between three internships for summer 2023. My goal is to eventually get into PE 2-3 years following graduation in 2024. Here are the options:

-a wealth management internship at GS/JPM/MS in NYC
-small boutique IB internship in NYC
-doing an unofficial internship for my friend's dad's private equity firm in Chicago

Also I'm working in IB this summer at a small boutique firm and don't necessarily love it, so I'm leading towards choosing the wealth management job to make connections at a top BB. Please let me know what you think!

If goal is PE, wealth management won’t get you there. If you were thinking about doing wealth management -> FT IBD at the same BB, you should forget about it. All of our FT lateral hires were from other banks or other groups within the firm, not other divisions.

As for your other two offers, depends what “unofficial” means, can you put it on your resume? Will you be doing anything or shadowing? Is the firm a widely known firm? If no, then not worth it at all. I’d rather you take the boutique IB or WM.

Despite all this, I would probably take the WM with an understanding that PE is probably out of the picture for now. You get name brand on the resume in finance rather than trying to FT recruit again for IBD out of a small shop.
