Why are FP&A teams aggressively bad at data management?

Working with multiple private companies currently with financial data structuring that is laughably counterintuitive.

Either the data doesn’t exist, it’s saved in a word file, or it’s kept in 49 different excel workbooks, with no standardized format along with merged cells & hardcodes interspersed.

I’ve gotten to the point where the expectation is inane data structure, and if there’s any logic to the process I’m pretty shocked.

Do you guys also find that? Sorry to all you FP&A folks, but it’s been a struggle lately
