Why is Cambridge more famous than Oxford?

Cambridge clearly seems to have more global name recognition than Oxford and in many places arguably even more than Harvard. Why do you think that is?

Is it mainly because of a stronger reputation in science and tech, more famous historical figures and Nobel winners, the Cambridge tech and innovation cluster, or just better long term branding and visibility?

What do you mean bro?

you’ve been posting abt college prestige for 2 years. it’s time to move on bro

  1. Harvard
  2. Oxford
  3. Cambridge
  4. MIT
  5. Stanford

Harvard/Oxford are in their own tier though because literally everybody knows them.

Plenty of people in the world don’t know what Stanford or Cambridge is. I don’t even think my mom knows what Stanford or Cambridge is (she’s from rural China and moved to Canada around 10 years ago).

It’s objectively not? I’ve never met someone who thinks Cambridge is more well-known in the world than Oxford. Oxford (with Harvard) is in its own tier if you want to discuss universal name recognition. My cousins from my country of origin (in rural Southeast Asia) don’t even know what Cambridge is. They only know Harvard/Oxford.

I was educated in the UK and currently reside in MENA. If you ask any person on the street which university is the most prestigious or famous in the world they’ll all say either Harvard or Oxford. Plenty of people here don’t know about Cambridge or MIT.

This post actually made me laugh out loud. This is the same as saying Yale is more well-known and famous than Harvard.
