Working in the Energy sector - why do Americans call petrol “gas” when it’s a liquid?

I’m an analyst 2 in a O+G team at a M-BB. I’ve never understood why Americans call petrol “gas” even thoughts it’s obviously a liquid

Is there some inside joke here?
