On a tangent, Jeff Bezos was the youngest MD at D E Shaw
Edit: sorry he was the youngest VP there, not MD
Have seen a couple do analyst to associate to VP in 5 years. Worked with a guy who would have done it in just under 4 years if he stayed on - left 6 months before promotions.
what was the factor that led to his rapid promotion?
modeling skills?
connections at the firm?
ability to bring in business?
curious
He was just all round extremely solid. Got promoted from AN2 to AS1, then AS1 to AS3. Wouldn't be surprised if he was double promoted again to VP2 rather than VP1 if he stayed. He was extremely efficient, produced great materials free from error, and was very solid technically. On top of this, was a really pleasant guy to work with and never saw him flustered or angry. The downside of being so good is every MD wants you on their deals and as a result he got fucked repeatedly, often pulling some of the longest hours on the floor. Probably explains why he left before getting the promotion.
interesting, appreciate the info!
if there's one thing I learned from this forum, it's to manage expectations and never be too useful
What would have been the response toward someone who is that good but decides to push back against excessive staffings?
