A Career in 'Strategy'?
Hey WSO'ers,
Recently I was going through interviews for an S&T internship. The MD I was speaking with said that I seemed like a good fit for 'strategy' and that he could see me being successful in that area at the firm.
I like the idea of strategy, and from what I understand it would be an interesting area. But I've found basically no postings or readings on what it means to actually be in 'strategy' at a bank.
Could anyone shed light on what exactly a career in strategy entails, and how one should work to become involved in this area? Also, is strategy just a component of S&T? Would really appreciate some clarification. Thanks so much, sorry in advance if this is a silly question.
"Strategy" could mean almost anything...
My guess is it means one of two things, corp. dev. strategy for the company (i.e. high level stuff for the firm) or strategy for the AM side of the firm.
wow dude. just wow.
It could be one of the above, but in this case I think it's neither.
In the context of S&T, he probably meant the "strategy" in non-equity products akin to "research" in equities. Many banks call it this because there's a greater focus on providing market outlook internally.
What product did he work in? I'm guessing something macro.
Q: I like the idea of strategy, and from what I understand it would be an interesting area. But I've found basically no postings or readings on what it means to actually be in 'strategy' at a bank. A: Here you go read this: http://www2.goldmansachs.com/careers/our-firm/divisions/gir/how-were-or….
If you were trying to get on an S&T desk and they told you to go to Strategy it's def not a great sign. The MD was trying to be nice, turn you down, and refer u to a spot in the bank that will do pretty much anything he says. I wouldn't take it though, get an S&T job somewhere else.
Q: Could anyone shed light on what exactly a career in strategy entails, and how one should work to become involved in this area? A: Macroeconomic research with some paper trade ideas put on reports for clients to see.
Q: Also, is strategy just a component of S&T? A: no it is research.
Thanks very much for the advice, I'm much clearer now on what he was referring to. Definitely think he was talking about research of non-equity products, just that he did a very bad job of explaining it haha.
