Adding somebody who viewed your LinkedIn

What's the procedure for someone who viewed your LinkedIn profile? If they appear to work in the industry you are trying to move to, is it appropriate to add them and say something along the lines of:

"Hello, I noticed that we have XXX connection in common. Your job title and company look interesting and was wondering if you'd be able to answer some questions I had"

FWIW I'm talking about 2nd connections here. I would guess doing this for a 3rd connection is a bit of a stretch? Or maybe I'm wrong. Either way, if anybody has some insight I'd greatly appreciate it.

Why would this make the OP a creep? They are simply paying attention to who views their profile. These people probably found their profile through the common connection.

I say go for it. What is the worst that could happen? They call you a creep?

When a plumber from Hoboken tells you he has a good feeling about a reverse iron condor spread on the Japanese Yen, you really have no choice. If you don’t do it to him, somebody else surely will. -Eddie B.

If it's a 2nd degree connection and like you said, it's from someone who "appears to work in the industry you are trying to move to".....then why don't you just ask the connection point (ie: the person who knows you both) to make an introduction simliar to reaching out via general networking?

After a quick phone chat where you position yourself as wanting to learn more about the industry then add this person to your linkedin network.
