Advice for an internal career switch conversation with the CIO

Hi!

Sorry this is going to be slightly long but I'd really appreciate some guidance.

So, I finished my MBA last year and after a 2 month internship at a buy side firm (mutual fund in Asia), I got offered a full time stint in credit research. Another batchmate of mine, who interned with me, got into equity research. The firm has only recently started recruiting students straight from MBA colleges and we do believe that they have long term plans for us.

But after around 9 months into the job, I'm not finding the role to be very exciting. I find a certain lack of depth in research on the credit side if I compare it to the equity guys. And when I have meetings with the fund managers (a role I target for myself down the line), their role is so macro driven and top-down in approach that I find a huge disconnect between the two roles. And to make matters significantly worse, the research team on the fixed income side is not the brightest and driven, and there's no one to look up to. I don't see myself growing to my fullest potential in this role.

And now I'm considering switching into ER (which is what I was hoping for when I was interviewing with them in the first place). I know the work will be more exciting and challenging for sure. But how should I go about this so that it doesn't backfire? Because it'll surely disrupt their plans to some extent. But if it helps, they are hiring more MBA interns for both asset classes again soon.

Thanks!
