Advice needed for a reneging situation

Hi guys, I have received a return offer from last summer from Bank A (back-office operation role). However, I just secured a front office internship with Bank B. My plan was to start full-time role with Bank B (front-office role) if I can get the conversion. If not, I will read a master program and recruit for a front office role again, because I want to stay in the front office as much as possible. 

I planned to tell HR of Bank A that I need to renege for master, which is true if I do not get the conversion. I am using this reason because my seniors were in the same position last time and the HR was understanding of such situations and did not blacklist them. 

However, if I got a conversion from Bank B, Bank B's HR will need to do a background check. I am worried that Bank A's HR will realise that I am lying and may say something not good for my conversion offer with Bank B. Will it matter? Should I be worried? Appreciate any advice! :)

If you haven't accepted the return offer than you have not reneged. Reneging is signing the offer and then telling the firm that you're breaking the contract. Since you haven't signed the offer you can sign the other offer with the other bank. If they ask why you can just say that I got another offer for a role that fits my career goals better.

Edit: Misread. You can do either one, but just don't tell which bank you're moving to
