Advice on networking for corporate banking roles?

I've been on many calls with people working in corporate banking, ranging from analysts to VPs. Generally, I get along well with them, and have even had a few say they would pass on my resume. However, I'm wondering how I can improve my performance during these calls - now that I have a solid understanding of the basics of corporate banking, I'm trying to think of more insightful questions to ask people in the industry, (especially within coverage groups). However, I have a hard time coming up with questions that keep the conversation flowing instead of seeming like an interrogation, other than the very basic stuff (what does your day to day consist of, where do you see yourself in 5 years, etc.). I was wondering if you guys have any go-to questions that will show you know a certain amount about the field already, any interesting trends in the industry you enjoy speaking about, or any other general advice about networking in corporate banking.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some tips and potential questions that could help you improve your networking calls with corporate banking professionals:

  1. Research and Relevance: Before your call, do some research on the bank's recent deals, news, and any industry trends. This will allow you to ask informed questions that show your genuine interest and understanding of the industry.

  2. Ask for Personal Insights: Instead of just asking about their day-to-day tasks, ask how they've seen the corporate banking industry evolve during their career and where they see it going. This can lead to a more engaging conversation about industry trends.

  3. Discuss Specific Deals: If appropriate, ask about a specific deal the bank has worked on recently. Inquire about the challenges faced and the strategies used to overcome them. This shows you're not just interested in the role but also in the work itself.

  4. Career Path and Decisions: Instead of the generic "where do you see yourself in 5 years?" question, ask about the decisions that led them to their current role and any pivotal moments in their career. This can provide you with valuable insights into career progression in corporate banking.

  5. Industry Trends and Challenges: Bring up a recent trend in the industry, such as the impact of technology on corporate banking, and ask for their opinion on it. This can demonstrate your knowledge and provoke a thoughtful discussion.

  6. Advice for Aspiring Bankers: Ask for advice on what they wish they knew when they were in your position or what they believe is crucial for someone entering the field today.

  7. Follow-Up on Resume Referrals: If they've mentioned passing on your resume, politely inquire about any feedback they might have received or if there's someone else they think you should speak with.

Remember, the goal is to have a natural conversation rather than an interview. Listen actively, and when they share information, use it as a springboard for further discussion. This approach can help you build a rapport and leave a lasting impression.
