Age Issue in Recruiting?
I am having an issue I hope you all can help me out with. I am 27 and will be 29 when I get out of my masters of accounting program; although I look very young and get mistaken for a high school student. Looking at my resume, you would think I am regular age (22/23) for a recent graduate.
My question is: Considering that I have good grades and a decent looking resume, what are the chances that after I submit my transcripts (when they see how old I really am) they will ding me?
Most of my prior experience has been either unpaid/irrelevant, or both. Also, my academic background, before my last institution, has also been scattered and not very impressive.
I am targeting big 4 + GT/BDO/MCG and I am confident that, based on my resume, I can get a good deal of interviews but I am very worried about the skeletons in the closet. I would really appreciate some insight here. Thanks.
What other skeletons are you hiding? It seems like you are not telling us everything here.
Maybe I made that sound too dramatic. It is really just my age and my rather scattered work and community college record. I would not hide or lie about anything if asked, I would just try to avoid putting this info out there until I absolutely have to.
legally, hiring decisions can't be influenced by age. but - sure it happens as long as the firm/team/individual interviewing you doesn't slip and explicit state it.
You're in or will enter a Masters program... thus you should be interviewing in the fall for a summer internship through your OCR - I'll assume the latter. You're in the process of a re-brand. You're obviously doing what it takes to progress your career - potential career switch to an accounting related role (barf - accounting, bullet to the head). It's not for all, but whatever floats your boat.
For the love of god, have some confidence in yourself... Stop focusing on the negatives and focus on re-branding yourself. Join professional organizations (even if it's just a name dropper on the resume), network with people in the industry and if anyone asks about your past; show some humility and be honest. You didn't know what you wanted to do - but once you did, you took the effort to enroll into a master program and acquire the skill set.
You can re-brand yourself however you want. If you sit here and focus on your age and your past, you will always have that in the back of your mind. This mindset will oooooze out of you, you will become your own worst enemy and the road ahead will be tough. No one wants to hear your weakness. Convey why you're great for position xyz for firm abc based on how you FIXED yourself. SPIN SPIN SPINNNNNNNN - without too much fluff of course. People smell BS from a mile away - just be honest.

Dammit your f*cking right. I spend a ton of time dwelling on the worst case, what if, scenarios and to tell you the truth it has been beating the hell out of me for too long. I think my resume can get me the interview and from there I am just going to be straight forward and honest. I know I have a lot to offer and as long as I can show the recruiters that, I think I should be okay. BTW I know a lot of people equate accounting to a bullet in the head but I cant help but be interested in it; hopefully I can make that show come interview time.
