Applying through a company's website
Has anyone found success applying for a position when you are under qualified in some way? Namely if you do not meet the student status requirement.

Dude no, network your way in. You can't just hope that you will get the job online. Only got one shot. Just email someone and ask to meet them.
Online applications are not the blackhole many people think they are, I have had a few phone interviews from them. However, if you are not even close to the qualifications, don't bother.
I would agree that online apps are not a total blackhole, but I would never rest my fate on the online app- be proactive and network to ensure that you get that interview. I have to say though, I have been shocked sometimes by the limitations of networking vs. the online app. Have had a few firms with solid MD contacts putting me in touch with HR, speaking with HR, and no interviews. Other firms of similar caliber applied purely online and was contacted about an interview. This is the exception though, so do your best to network and make your own fate.
Honestly, online applications are 90% luck. My background is fairly weak and I received interviews from good places back in the summer when I was looking, just by quickly applying online as a random reach job. Granted networking trumps it by far, but a couple of interviews I got, I just blindly sent in an application with no hope of hearing even a denial.
Yes, I agree networking is key, my point was only that online applications are not completely useless. OP, I am assuming you go to Temple, I doubt there are alot of alumni in high-finance, but I bet there are some in the Philly area working in banking, PWM, asset management, that you can talk to.
I lucked into my current position through Monster.com without knowing anyone at the firm... and I have WELL under a 3.0
Don't know about if you're underqualified, but if you're a legitimate candidate, it doesn't hurt.
