Online applications are not the blackhole many people think they are, I have had a few phone interviews from them. However, if you are not even close to the qualifications, don't bother.

Yeah, maybe you are right but why would you ever allow there to be an opportunity to not give yourself the best chance to sell yourself. If someone reads 300 resumes they all blend together. If you go out in meet someone they will know you as a person and be able to imagine working with you, they will feel more obligated to give you a chance. You can present yourself as the best possible example of yourself and you may have qualities that they admire. They can put a name to a face. The odds are so so much higher. Plus networking is so easy keep in mind I am not in IB but this is a general point.

I would agree that online apps are not a total blackhole, but I would never rest my fate on the online app- be proactive and network to ensure that you get that interview. I have to say though, I have been shocked sometimes by the limitations of networking vs. the online app. Have had a few firms with solid MD contacts putting me in touch with HR, speaking with HR, and no interviews. Other firms of similar caliber applied purely online and was contacted about an interview. This is the exception though, so do your best to network and make your own fate.

Honestly, online applications are 90% luck. My background is fairly weak and I received interviews from good places back in the summer when I was looking, just by quickly applying online as a random reach job. Granted networking trumps it by far, but a couple of interviews I got, I just blindly sent in an application with no hope of hearing even a denial.

Yes, I agree networking is key, my point was only that online applications are not completely useless. OP, I am assuming you go to Temple, I doubt there are alot of alumni in high-finance, but I bet there are some in the Philly area working in banking, PWM, asset management, that you can talk to.
