Approaching HR with referral

I recently had an informational interview with a banker. At the end of the phone call when I asked him if he could suggest anyone else to speak with he told me to talk to a women in HR. does this mean that I should send HR my cover letter and resume and indicate that I have a referral or do I need to approach HR in a different way?

Ask the HR to walk you through the recruitment process, ask for dates for the interviews, etc., make sure that she has your most updated resume, and finally ask when are you suppose to hear back for first rounds.

"I do not think that there is any other quality so essential to success of any kind as the quality of perseverance. It overcomes almost everything, even nature."

They are the ones who, I think, finally decides who gets the interview and who does not because I have had cases where I got referrals from MD level guys, yet wasn't able to secure first rounds.

"I do not think that there is any other quality so essential to success of any kind as the quality of perseverance. It overcomes almost everything, even nature."

Bullshit. HR does whatever bankers tell them to do. HR doesn't tell MDs who to hire. Are you kidding me?

If you didn't get an interview with a 'referral,' that means you 1. didn't actually get a referral and the MD just said he did or 2. the MD didn't push for you hard (more 'consider this kid' vs 'interview this kid')

Yeah maybe you are right. I can't assert anything at this stage, unless and until I have any offer in my hand.

But what if the MD referred like 5-10 guys and so did the rest of the MDs, but they still can't interview all of them. Then what? Someone's gotta draw a line somewhere.

And over top of every referral, we have students from target schools.

"I do not think that there is any other quality so essential to success of any kind as the quality of perseverance. It overcomes almost everything, even nature."

Are you also trying to say that a referral from a MD is a guaranteed interview?

"I do not think that there is any other quality so essential to success of any kind as the quality of perseverance. It overcomes almost everything, even nature."

Interesting - something similar happened to me a few days ago. One of my contacts forwarded my resume to HR. Not really sure if anything is going to come out of it.

3334, so u think I should email her and ask bs questions first and give her the updated resume and then after a couple of emails proceed to ask when 1st round will come out?

Don't BS HR. They don't have time or patience for that. I would send something like this:

Ms. HR Lady:

I am currently a soph/junior/senior at XYZ University majoring in ABC. I recently spoke to Mr. Banker about a full-time/internship position at BankName. He suggested that I speak to you regarding the DEF position. Please let me know the best way to proceed.

Attached is my resume and cover letter. I can be reached via email at ____ or by phone at ______.

Best regards,

Eager Student

That's my quick 2 minute vision. It's a bit harsh and filled with errors, but you get the point.

I can understand your situation that how you are confused to opt which one is beneficial for you HR approach is beneficial for a job interview or a Referral? So just relax and analyze both approaches and find out which one is preferable because you better know the level of both approaches.
