Appropriate?
After you have been rejected from a position, Is it appropriate to email the recruiter/person who interviewed you and ask them what went wrong so that you can improve in the future?
Thanks!

Completely fine - they may take it as a positive. This method is how I got my first internship, at a PE firm where only 8 out of 600 who applied got in. It shows real interest.
Don't be negative, ask about how to improve or which skills/characteristics do you value etc. and always keep the door open by asking if it is ok to look for them for guidance later on aka I'll follow up with you periodically til the next hiring cycle and I better be your top choice then :D
