Asking if a firm takes interns
I have an informational interview with an analyst at a pe firm next week that I'm interested in interning at for the summer. Only thing is, I'm not sure the firm takes interns. How can I approach this topic without coming across as needy and is it even appropriate to do so?
When I have spoken with alumni or people at firms I was interested in working at I never had issues asking if they "historically took interns and may be looking for some next summer." That said, it wasn't the first question I asked. Usually, I would get to know the person and their firm, and they may mention it themselves in which case I would follow up, or they wouldn't mention in which I'd specifically ask at the end. Analysts at firms usually have a good sense that students are interested in internship opportunities, so I wouldn't think they would be caught off guard. Just make sure you are talking to them to get to know them and their thoughts on the firm, not just to be someone to pass a resume to. Hope that helps.
