Awkward Circles

This may just be one particular experience but I would appreciate some verification.

As a freshman, I had the opportunity to interview with a for S&T with a BB (didn't get the internship though). But the interesting thing is that I got to see the happenings of info sessions and networking events earlier than most of my peers. At both of these events, there was a number of returning SAs, a couple associates, and a couple MDs. Not long into the night, awkward semicircles started to form around the MD and associate. This is reasonable because everyone wants face time with the top dogs but it was obviously fake on both ends. Intern hopefuls asking basic market questions trying to show there knowledge and MDs attempting and failing to seem interested. Maybe I am too critical. What do Wall St. professionals really think of these situations and what type of people do they really walk away remembering?
