Has anyone heard of the background check happening after the start date for full time? None of my bosses have mentioned being called at some small companies where there literally is no HR contact, and I'm starting soon. Anyone ever have references called or the rest of the check done after you start?

Is there something specific you're worried about? If not, who cares? If they check, they check. If they don't, they don't.
I've never heard of doing a check after you start.
You also never know if they called someone: I've known one person on a reference list or at a company on someone's resume well enough that I'll just ask that one person because I trust their opinion and don't need to have someone check every job and reference.
