Best route to medium sized buyside?
My long term career goal is to move to the buy side (specifically, hedge fund) and I've been on the sell side research for 2 years now (elite boutique). Should I try to break into buy side by
1) joining a small hedge fund ($200mm) and try to move my way up, or 2) staying at current firm until I get an offer for a medium sized firm ($500mm-$1b) as I wanted?
It seems that once you're in the small hedge fund circle, it is much more difficult to move than transferring as a seasoned and well renowned analyst on the sell side (senior analyst at your firm).
Also, how hard is it to transfer to a bb from a small hedge fund, in case things go south?
