Breaking into FO from BO - Off Cycle Recruiting Advice for Ivy Student
Hey guys,
I am a junior at Cornell with good experience (private equity, wealth management, management consulting) and extracurriculars (e-board of competitive business club, team lead of national econ competition team {top 3% national placement}). For context, I did an internship in a back-office role at a BB this past summer and have a low GPA (3.2–3.5).
I am looking to break into a front-office, market-facing role at a bank (S&T, PWM, Capital Markets) and have spoken with career advisors who have given me the typical advice for my situation.
I’m looking for honesty and transparency as to:
- What firms/roles I should realistically be targeting
- What areas are best for me to focus on given my background
Right now I’m applying to all roles open and cold emailing alumni at top shops I want to target.
What should I change in my approach, and where do you think I have the best shot at breaking in?
