Breaking into IB from technology background advice?
Hello everyone,
I hope im posting this in the right place. I'm currently at the crossroads of my academic journey and professional career, seeking guidance and advice from you esteemed individuals with experience in (IB) or even (PE).
Firstly, let me provide you with some background information. I am just graduating from the University of Oxford, holding a BSc in Computer Science and Mathematics and an MSc in Engineering. I've had the opportunity to intern at Deutsche Bank in the Technology department during the summer last year and a couple of other technology-based internships.
Even though my background is primarily tech-oriented, I am quite passionate about entering the field of investment banking or possibly even private equity. However, I am unsure of the best route to take given my circumstances. I am considering various options, including taking a gap year to secure more internships or possibly enrolling in online finance-related courses to enhance my knowledge and resume.
In addition, I am contemplating whether or not to apply for positions in the U.S., even though I currently don't hold a U.S. visa. Would this be a significant obstacle?
I am reaching out to this forum for some advice:
- Given my current profile, what are the chances for me to break into IB or PE?
- Would it be beneficial for me to take a gap year and apply for more internships in this field, or would enrolling in finance-related courses be more valuable?
- For those who have transitioned from tech to IB/PE, how did you manage the transition? Any advice on what worked and what didn't?
- Regarding applying to U.S. positions, what would be the challenges I might face, and how should I prepare for them?
I would greatly appreciate any advice or guidance on these matters. My goal is to utilize my tech background in a finance setting, and I am eager to hear your thoughts on the most strategic way to approach this transition.
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
