Breaking into investment banking from TAS

I used to work in TAS at a middle market accounting firm. With two strong years as an associate I got laid off and have been trying to break into investment banking. I run into a lot of individuals continually telling me I should have no problem breaking into IB with my background and working at the firm I used to work at. But, with M&A down as it has been it seems middle market firms are eating up talent they couldn't get before if they even are hiring, and most boutique firms are following that lead. Is there any advice anybody may have for someone in my position?
