Breaking into Investment Banking in Poland

Hey everyone

I'm studying Finance at a top 50 school in the United States and want to break in to IB/PE in Poland. Was wondering if firms actually hire students abroad and if there is a difference in recruiting compared to the US? Would love to hear from people who worked in the sector.

Thanks

Hey there!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, breaking into Investment Banking or Private Equity in Poland as a student studying in the United States is definitely possible. However, it's important to note that the recruiting process may differ from that in the U.S.

In the U.S, the recruiting process is quite structured, with a clear cycle of when firms recruit. However, in Poland, the process might not be as structured. It's also worth noting that networking plays a crucial role in landing a job in these sectors.

While I don't have specific information on the Polish market, I would recommend reaching out to professionals in the field through LinkedIn or other networking platforms. They could provide you with more specific insights into the recruiting process in Poland.

Also, consider participating in the WSO Virtual Bootcamps. They offer valuable resources like Financial Modeling & Valuation and Private Equity Interview Prep, which could be beneficial in your journey.

Remember, the key is to be proactive and persistent. Good luck!

Hey,

I never really meant it like that as I just wanted to provide some sort of background. Do you have any sort of insights on the IB/PE industry and ways of breaking in?

Poles are rather direct lol but overall the IB scene in Poland is very small and everyone normally would prefer to work in the UK / the US rather than in Poland. There are GS, MS, Rotschild and JPM offices in Poland but they usually hire abour 2-3 analysts each so chances of getting a role there are rather non-existent. Also these banks rather do advisory. The same goes for PKO which does both advisory and capital markets. Also players like BNP Paribas only do capital markets. The IB job in Poland isn't glorified as the salary isn't great. While GS, MS, Rotschield and JPM pay okay in Polish terms (but still less than in the UK), PKO pays peanuts (and minimum wage to IB interns). So, all in all, I don't recommend working in IB in Poland but if you wanna apply, just do it directly through the website of each bank as it's normally done in other countries.
