Breaking into Private Equity or Hedge Fund Industry from Institutional Asset Management

Hey guys,

I am currently working as a portfolio analyst in the Foundations and Endowments division of a large commercial bank. I've reached the three year mark and am ready to move on. I'd like to work in P/E or for a fund, but all of my experience revolves around manager due diligence, portfolio optimization, attribution analysis etc. so I don't have any direct experience analyzing individual companies or doing any sort of modeling revolving around the financial statements. I realize fund of funds might be an option, but I would prefer to do something more direct.

Within my division I am looked upon highly and am the only one with my position to get promoted to Assistant Vice President so I have plenty to talk about from a "leadership" or "accomplishment" perspective. However, I come from a non-target school, and, as previously mentioned, I don't have direct experience. I have passed L1 of the CFA so I am somewhat familiar with financial statements and think I could get up to speed quick.

If anyone has any advice for breaking into either of these industries with my background, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.
