Calling vs. emailing?

I hadn't seen many threads about calling vs. emailing when it comes to initially starting conversations w/ firms about career opportunities and potential fits within ANY division. I don't have a personal question, but this thread is for a discussion about the pro's and con's of each, in which situations to call or email, and other types of communications when it comes to looking for a job. Any insight is welcome.
