Canadian Trying To Summer at London

Hey guys, I go to a Canadian target (Ivey/Queen’s) and I am interested in recruiting at the UK for IB SA 23. Does anyone have any insights on how recruiting as a Canadian works in the UK and what visa processes are like?

Banks at London are sponsoring SAs for internationals, especially EU students. From a friend's experience, over 50% of his SA cohort are non-residents. As far as I know, this is being done through the T5 Visa (now called Temporary Work visa, go look it up) which is designed for short-term employment and internships. The eligibility criteria for the visa is the same for all countries, so, as a Canadian, you aren't at disadvantage from a visa standpoint vs EU students, although it is true that London recruiters prefer EU students because London covers Continental Europe

I haven't done this but from my research, I recommend looking into the "Youth Mobility Scheme visa".

The requirements are:

  • want to live and work in the UK for up to 2 years
  • are aged 18 to 30
  • have £2,530 in savings
  • have certain types of British Nationality or are from certain countries or territories (Canada is on this list)
  • meet the other eligibility requirements

This may be an easier way to secure a job offer, but it may be more helpful to use this when recruiting for full time roles, because you can only use this type of visa once.

Hope this helps, good luck!

I went to one of those schools and am now in the UK. As mentioned above, the Tier 5 "Youth Mobility" visa is quite easy to get although it only lasts for two years which might be a concern if you intend to return full-time. My firm sponsored me for a Tier 2 "Skilled Worker" visa for full-time, which gives me a 5-year visa, after which I can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and then eventually citizenship if I so choose.

I only applied to one firm in the UK, so I can't speak on behalf of every firm, but mine at least is very open to looking at Canadian applicants for both SA and FT. I'd treat it like applying to any of the U.S. processes (although networking is deemphasized a bit over here compared to North America).
