Career Advice for Transitioning into Finance
Hello everyone,
To introduce myself, I am currently a one-year associate lawyer in the capital markets field. I provide advice on swaps and other OTC derivatives, DCM, IPO, and ECM products. I also give advice on lending and project finance as a practice of banking and finance. In addition to my law degree from a highly regarded university in my home country, I hold both a BA and an MSc in Finance from well-reputed universities.
I’ve come to a point where I’m evaluating the next steps in my career, and I would greatly appreciate your input.
I understand that living in a vibrant city like London can be important, but for me, income matters more. Therefore, I’d be happier in Zurich or Luxembourg if the compensation is competitive. However, I don’t speak German or French, which is something to consider.
Due to financial reasons, I am not considering schools like LBS or LSE, as I have limited savings and do not have family support. I am focusing on the following options:
- HSG - MBF (Zurich): I would love to work at an MBB or BB in Zurich or Luxembourg, which is why I’m considering this program. However, I don’t speak German or French.
- Exeter - LLM (London): I could pursue a legal career in London, but entering the market as a foreign lawyer seems very challenging.
- Trinity College Dublin - MSc in Law & Finance: This could help me continue as a lawyer in the EU or London, and I think the finance courses might offer a slim chance to help me transition into finance roles.
- ILF - LLM (Frankfurt): Although not as well-known in the finance industry, this program is quite respected in the legal field and offers finance courses. They also teach you tools like Bloomberg Terminal. It seems ideal for a legal career in the EU, but if I choose this, I should forget about MBB or BB in finance.
Considering my background and interests, I have a strong passion for capital markets and enjoy my legal work in this field. However, I also believe that a career as an investment banker or consultant could be more lucrative and fun. I think I have the analytical skills for this transition, as I often use financial knowledge in my legal advice.
With all this in mind, I would greatly appreciate your advice:
- Should I consider switching careers, and if so, could I still pursue my desired job in Zurich through HSG MBF, even though I don’t speak German?
- If I stay in law, which of these options would best support my career goals?
Thank you so much for your thoughts!
